Getting Out of Cope: Møns Klint & Dyrehaven

Don’t get me wrong, living in Copenhagen is a dream, but sometimes I think that people get stuck in the bubble of the city. Denmark also exists very much outside the city borders. So, when I got the chance to get outside of Copenhagen and explore the cliffs of the southern coast of Denmark called Møns Klint, I jumped on it. Thankfully, my friend Liv’s host family generously offered to drive us to the cliffs, which are otherwise a bit complicated to get to through public transportation. After an hour and a half car ride we arrived filled with introductions, we arrived at our destination. Upon arrival, we were happily greeted by this adorable *mountain* cat.

Our journey began with a walk on top of the cliffs. We planned to walk on top for the first half and eventually make our way down to walk alongside the shoreline on our way back. The walk was absolutely lovely. It was so nice to get a breath of fresh air and truly be surrounded by nature. Copenhagen is a charming and mild city, but the cobblestone streets and crowds of people can get old at times. The leisurely walk on the terrain was rejuvenating and the views from up top were amazing.

After over an hour-long walk alongside the top of the cliffs, we made it to a lengthy set of stairs that took us down to the shoreline. During our walk, we all took note of how close the tide was to the cliffs but still decided it was still worth it to go along the shoreline. Once we made it down, we began our walk back and were quickly met with some troubles.

One by one, each of us either went through a slip or took an unfortunate step while trying to navigate our way through the narrow path by the cliffs. I happened to take a poorly timed step that resulted in my foot becoming fully submerged in seawater from an incoming wave. It was only for a short time that I was sad over my soaked shoes as my other friends fell into deceptive piles of mud. The worst was when Avery fell knee-deep into a pool of mud that had the same appearance as compact sand.

Despite being covered in mud, Avery was a trooper and we finished our walk along the shore with some laughs. I think the views were beautiful enough for us to forget about the whole mess.

Once we made it back up, we went to work on Avery’s mud-encrusted boots and that concluded our journey to Møns Klint!

It was not long after that I made another trip for some fresh air. Our chosen location this time was Dyrehavn, which translates directly to “deer farm.” This park was originally constructed and filled with deer to serve as a hunting ground for the King. Here, herds of deer are allowed to freely roam around the park and it is free to access for people to take walks around and go deer watching. There are around 2,000 free-range deer that inhabit this park, so it is quite easy to spot them when walking around.

Deer!!

Overall, I would highly recommend any of these trips for a unique experience with nature in Denmark. Sometimes city life can be suffocating and all you really need is to see the ocean or a few cute deer. 🙂
